Minimum Qualifications: 

  • Bachelor's degree required, master's degree or higher in a scientific discipline preferred.
  • Minimum five years of journalism experience.
  • Highly organized, articulate, strong writer and editor with the ability to work to a daily deadline, manage multiple tasks and work as part of a diverse collaborative team with high standards.
  • Ability to be productive while working remotely.
  • Ability to identify and develop story ideas of interest to the public.
  • Talent for translating complicated ideas into clear, accessible writing that is purged of jargon.
  • Experience in online content production.

We are seeking a journalist with at least five years of newsroom experience to work as part of our science and technology editorial team. Your beat will focus on biomedical topics, genetics, genomics and neuroscience, as well as aspects of the COVID-19 pandemic. You'll commission and edit nonpartisan articles written by scholars in these fields to help us build our readership and impact.

The Conversation U.S. has become a go-to place for readers looking for research-based information on science topics as well as for scholars who want to reach the general public with their research. Do you browse science journals for fun? Regularly find yourself following your curiosity down scientific rabbit holes? Do you like being the first to report on new important research? The ideal candidate will have in-depth knowledge of biomedical research and the main issues involved in covering these topics, as well as experience working in a daily news environment as a reporter or editor.

The Conversation U.S. is an independent nonprofit media organization that publishes explanatory journalism, daily news analysis and commentary written by academics, edited by journalists and aimed at the general public. Articles on our site are based on evidence and scholarship, not opinion. Our team of journalists works with academics across the U.S. to help the general public make sense of important news. We take our work seriously but we also offer a fun and flexible work culture with great benefits and lots of opportunity to shine. This full-time position is currently a work-from-home job. Anticipating a post-pandemic world, we prefer to hire somebody in a city where we have an office - Boston or New York - but we will consider candidates in other locations.
